Country star Carrie Underwood knows how to cover another artist’s song and do it well. And that’s precisely what she did at the recent Toby Keith tribute concert that took place in Nashville last night at Bridgestone Arena.

Toby Keith: American Icon featured quite the laundry list of massive stars in the country world. Nearly two dozen performers took the stage to cover some of the late Toby Keith’s greatest hits, talk about their experiences with the singer, and highlight his charity endeavors while he was alive.

Carrie Underwood, in particular, delivered an incredible rendition of Toby Keith’s hit “A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action” from his self-titled 1993 album. You can watch Underwood’s performance here:

Carrie Underwood’s History With Toby Keith

Carrie Underwood has always been a huge fan of Toby Keith. Ahead of his death from stomach cancer in February of this year, Underwood once honored the late country star at the BMI Country Awards back in 2022.

After Keith passed away, Underwood had nothing but kind things to say about the late country icon.

“There are so many things that can be said about Mr. Toby Keith,” Underwood once said in an interview with Country 102.5. “I mean, obviously, he has had such a monumental career. He has some of the biggest songs that ever were or probably ever will be in country music. And obviously, he has built up that legacy for himself that will live on.”

Underwood, who is also an Oklahoma native like Keith, spoke about their geographical connection as well.

“But I think one of the best things about Toby is his love for Oklahoma,” Underwood continued. “He’s a proud Okie, and I feel like that’s something that always connected us. We’d talk about it. He’s one of the ones who never left. […] I feel like that’s one of the things that I respect the most about him; he never forgot where he came from and has been such a stellar example to the rest of us to do the same.”

It only makes sense that Underwood would be one of many of Keith’s contemporaries to perform his songs in his honor during the Toby Keith: American Icon event.

If you’re worried that you missed the tribute concert, don’t worry! Toby Keith: American Icon will air on NBC on Wednesday, August 28.
