The media rated him as “the greatest artist of all time on stage”, at the same time, many others also called him the most spectacular rock singer of all time, or as the British newspaper The Sun honored him with the phrase “Ultimate rock god” and placed him in the number 1 position. Freddie Mercury, is certainly one of the most talented artists in the history of world music.

On September 5, 2018, if he were still alive, he would have turned 72 years old, but even though he passed away 27 years ago, his legacy and mark in the music industry have never lost its appeal and always conveyed the greatest emotions. The lead singer of the legendary band Queen has captivated many generations with his intense appeal, energy and dynamism always shown in every performance, as well as the ability to create extremely great excitement. It was these qualities that made him an unprecedented showman.

According to his biographers, although he was known as a personable and somewhat flamboyant artist, Freddie was actually quite shy and reserved, especially with people he did not know well. He once revealed his personality in an interview: “When I was on stage, I was very open and generous, but inside I was completely different.”

Not only was he an excellent artist on stage, this man was also a great composer, his writing style was extremely diverse, with many genres, from progressive rock, heavy metal, gospel music to disco music, as he explained in an interview in 1986: “I hate doing the same thing over and over again. I like to look at what’s going on in music, cinema, theatre and try to combine them.”

Many of his works have become all-time favourites; certainly the powerful, heroic melody of “We are the Champions” is well known, a masterpiece that has become a sports anthem.

Another sports-related song, “Barcelona” showcased Freddie’s creative genius, a masterpiece that perfectly combined pop and opera, when he performed it with Montserrat Caballé. It was the official song of the 1992 Olympics, held in Barcelona, a year after his death.

Queen, ancora un record: il loro show al Live Aid è il più popolare della storia - Radio Monte Carlo

Another masterpiece that cannot be ignored is “Somebody to love”, a song with strong gospel influences and performed by him with a very complex tessitura voice, while the choir takes the audience flying with its harmonious beauty. The work also incorporates blues and jazz choirs.

Similarly, the song “Do not stop me now” also holds a special place in Queen’s lifetime works; with Freddie Mercury on piano, Roger Taylor on drums and John Deacon on bass.

Notably, this song was voted “the best song to listen to while driving” by viewers of the BBC show “Top Gear” in 2005, and in 2011, it was used as a google doodle to honor Freddie on what would have been his 65th birthday.

However, everyone agrees that, apart from his ability to compose, arrange, or anything related to Queen’s works, one of the talents that made Freddie a legend was his live performance ability, which can be said to be extremely special. According to critics, “he was a singer who excited and attracted countless audiences, with a very diverse performance style: passionate, flamboyant, flamboyant, authoritative, unrestrained, not the least bit shy about doing what he liked.” Perhaps, one of Queen’s most memorable live shows was the 1985 Live Aid concert, when the entire audience of 72,000 cheered enthusiastically and sang along with the band. Music experts described it as follows: “Those who are wasting time creating lists of the top rock bands and giving the top spots to Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, are making a terrible mistake. Freddie, with his performance at Live Aid, was the best of them all.”

However, Live Aid was not a record-breaking concert in terms of audience numbers, it was Mercury’s final live performance with Queen, held on 9/8/1986 at Knebworth that created that. FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SEVEN THOUSAND PEOPLE attended this concert, and even today, it is still the biggest concert in music history.

Even now, despite having “turned 72 years old”, Freddie’s talent and charisma can still create a huge influence on today’s generation of listeners and music makers.
