Rihanna welcomed the new year in by sharing a major milestone: She didn’t drink at all in 2024. The singer posted a video of her counting down the New Year’s Eve ball drop with friends. As the first seconds of 2025 passed, she announced, “Y’all, I didn’t drink all year! I didn’t drink all year.”
She captioned her post, “New Year, New Me.”
Rihanna is not the only celebrity who has spoken about quitting drinking. In 2022, Bella Hadid explained why she dropped the habit in an InStyle interview. She publicly celebrated 10 months of sobriety in July 2023 and is a co-founder of Kin Euphorics, a line of non-alcoholic beverages.

Of her decision, Hadid said, “I have done my fair share of drinking. I loved alcohol and it got to the point where even I started to, you know, cancel nights out that I felt like I wouldn’t be able to control myself.”
These days, she told InStyle, “I don’t feel the need [to drink] because I know how it will affect me at three in the morning when I wake up with horrible anxiety thinking about that one thing I said five years ago when I graduated high school. There’s just this never-ending effect of, essentially, you know, pain and stress over those few drinks that didn’t really do much, you know?”
Tom Holland, who launched his own non-alcoholic beer brand this fall, also recently spoke about giving up alcohol. “[It] was a tricky road, and it was something that I really needed to do,” he said on The Tonight Show. He called his first year sober “a massive milestone and a huge achievement.“
More young people are choosing not to drink. “Among Gen Z, the proportion of people who choose not to drink is increasing by about half a percentage point annually. All these years add up,” Ziming Xuan, a social epidemiologist and professor of community health sciences at Boston University, recently told ELLE in our piece examining the rise in sobriety. “We have a larger proportion of people who choose not to drink. And for those who choose to drink, they drink less.”
