Anthony Kiedis Apologized After Sending 17-Year-Old Ione Skye to Abortion Clinic Alone
Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis wrote a “heartfelt” apology letter to ex-girlfriend Ione Skye after he sent her to get an abortion alone when she was 17, she told The U.S. Mirror.
In a new memoir, Skye reveals that the rocker, who was 25 at the time, paid for her to have an abortion after getting her pregnant in 1988. But he did not accompany her to the clinic where the operation was carried out.
“I think in hindsight, maybe it just was all too much, like he was running from his feelings,” actress Skye, now 54, told the Mirror in an interview. “He must have clearly had feelings about it that he couldn’t handle.”

During the late 1980s, Kiedis—who is now 62—was in the throes of addiction to heroin. He didn’t want to have a baby.
Skye wrote in Say Everything, which was published earlier this month, that she was “the type of girl who’d wanted a baby since I was a baby, who used to fantasize about finding a swaddled infant on my doorstep or catching a flying ghost baby with a butterfly net.”
“But fantasizing was different from seeing,” she wrote. “I couldn’t see having a baby at this point.”
Skye wrote that Kiedis didn’t offer to go into the clinic with her; he just “guiltily dropped me off at the curb.” She decided not to ask anyone else to come with her.

“I think I thought I was a little grown up and I should just be doing these things,” she told the Mirror.
The couple eventually split the following year, and Skye went on to marry Beastie Boys frontman Adam Horovitz. She revealed that Kiedis later sent her a letter apologizing for his mistakes during their relationship, including sending her to the clinic alone and repeatedly cheating on her.
“It was very thorough, really amazing. It actually did a lot, to be honest,” she told the Mirror, describing it as “really heartfelt and honest.”
“It was just like everything said in the way that you should say it, and it felt real,” Skye added. “It felt like he was really trying to be a better person and deal with like, he had like jealousy, anger issues.”

Skye is best known for starring in the 1989 teen romance Say Anything, which is where her memoir gets its name. She also revealed in her memoir that she did, in fact, sleep with her co-star in the film, John Cusack—a topic of much speculation around the time—albeit more than a decade after the movie came out.
Kiedis later had a baby with model Heather Christie, whom he dated from 2004 to 2008. The son, named Everly Bear, is now 17.
