In a pivotal interleague match-up, the Los Angeles Dodgers faced a significant setback when star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was forced to leave the game early during Saturday’s clash against the Kansas City Royals.

Yamamoto’s night ended abruptly after just two innings due to triceps tightness, with the game still locked at a scoreless tie. Within those two frames, Yamamoto’s stat line showed one hit allowed, one walk, and a single strikeout, an early close to what many hoped would be another standout performance.
This season, the rookie pitcher has made an impressive mark with a 6-2 record and a 3.00 ERA, accumulating 83 strikeouts over 72 innings. Yamamoto’s departure raised concerns particularly because, as noticed by Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation, there was a noticeable dip in his average pitching velocity.
The Dodgers’ official Twitter account confirmed the reason for Yamamoto’s exit was triceps tightness. Adding to the worry, McKain also pointed out on Twitter that the decrease in Yamamoto’s fastball velocity by 1.4 mph is particularly alarming given that he is the Dodgers’ $325 million investment.
Before joining the Dodgers, Yamamoto boasted an exceptional career in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, earning three Pacific League MVP awards, which was enough for Los Angeles to sign him to a 12-year, $325 million contract on December 27. His early departure from the game surely brings anxiety to Dodgers fans and the team’s management, considering the significant investment made in bringing the pitcher to MLB.
Despite this hiccup, the Dodgers continue to lead the NL West by a comfortable 7 and 1/2 games ahead of the second-place San Diego Padres, maintaining a strong position even in the face of adversity.
