Mariska Hargitay Breaks Silence on Controversial Exit of ‘Law and Order: SVU’ Co-Star

Mariska Hargitay candidly discussed the controversial departure of her Law & Order: SVU co-star, Kelly Giddish, in a recent interview with Variety. Giddish, who portrayed the beloved Detective Amanda Rollins for 12 years, was written off the show midway through season 24—a decision made by the franchise’s creator, Dick Wolf. This exit left both fans and crew members in dismay.
Hargitay, an executive producer on SVU and one of the original stars of the series, admitted that Giddish’s exit was the most challenging part of her tenure on the show. Despite her significant influence on set, Hargitay lamented that she was unable to alter Giddish’s fate.
“It’s a sore subject,” Hargitay confessed. “I have a lot of say on the show, but I didn’t have enough there.”
She went on to express her frustration at not being listened to, especially when she believed she was right. “That relationship was one of the most powerful relationships in television because you saw these two badass women, so flawed and so there for each other.”
Hargitay is determined to bring Giddish back in a permanent capacity for the next season of SVU. Giddish has already made guest appearances, including in the season 24 finale, the first episode of season 25, and she’s set to appear again in the 11th episode airing on May 2.
If Giddish returns permanently, it wouldn’t be unprecedented for the series to bring back a departed fan-favorite. Christopher Meloni, who played Detective Elliot Stabler, returned to the series in 2021 after a decade-long absence due to contract disputes. Alongside Hargitay, he was one of the show’s original stars.
While Giddish’s future on SVU remains uncertain, Hargitay cherishes the time she spends with her friend. “Kelli is my favorite actor to work with,” Hargitay enthused. “Kelli is my heart.”
Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
