Martin also noted that the complexity of writing love scenes for the couple was a significant factor in the decision. “When we began breaking stories for this season, trying to incorporate that relationship, we realized there just wasn’t enough time to delve deeply, to really explore their relationship issues, to do them justice,” she said.

Why Tucker Became Benson’s Love Interest

The choice to develop Tucker into a romantic partner for Benson was initially surprising given his previous role as a seemingly relentless adversary. However, showrunner Warren Leight saw this as an opportunity to add depth to Tucker’s character. “I know the fans have very strong feelings about anything involving Olivia,” Leight shared. “But we knew Tucker would be loaded. I think for the first dozen years on this show, he was Javert from Les Miz – the relentless, evil prosecutor who couldn’t see the good in anyone.”

Leight was intrigued by the idea of exploring the grey areas of Tucker’s character, believing that Olivia’s evolving perception of him could offer a fresh narrative direction. “Every time these two are in a scene together, I lean in,” he said. “We just tried to show that this was a human being over time.”

For Martin, the pairing of Benson and Tucker was more than just a plot twist; it was an opportunity for Benson to experience a deeper and more genuine relationship. “I think she felt that they had pretty good chemistry too,” Martin said of Hargitay’s response to the storyline.
