The “It’s My Life” singer’s brother has been with his band for decades.
Jon Bon Jovi may be the most famous member of the family, but the musician’s brother, Matt Bongiovi, has also had a successful career in show business.
Bon Jovi fans can get to know Bongiovi better in “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” which comes out April 26. Here’s everything you need to know about Bon Jovi’s talented older brother.
His last name is Jon Bon Jovi’s real last name

Fans of the band Bon Jovi know the band’s lead singer as Jon Bon Jovi, but his birth name is John Francis Bongiovi Jr. While the musician uses a different spelling of his last name professionally, his brother retains the family’s legal surname, Bongiovi.
Matt Bongiovi has worked with Jon Bon Jovi for decades.
Bongiovi has worked behind the scenes for his brother’s hugely successful rock band, Bon Jovi, for decades in various roles and has appeared in the band’s documentary series.
When speaking about the band’s longevity, Bongiovi shared some insights into their success.
“I think the band has ultimately been able to stand the test of time because they’ve evolved over time, but still retained their own identity,” he said.
Old footage from the early days of Bon Jovi’s career shows a young Bongiovi talking to a journalist about his plans to become a manager for the band. “I grew up in the organization, from being a production assistant — you know, learning along the way — to working in the management office and everything in between,” he shared in a recent interview for the documentary series.
Bon Jovi then revealed a bit about his brother’s involvement in the band.
“He was like a kid who liked to stay home, but because he was always home, he listened and learned,” he explained.
When reflecting on Bon Jovi’s rise to fame, Bongiovi spoke about his experience of witnessing it all up close.
“To see the magic happen in your house, in the room where that song was written, to grow up around that, it was really interesting to see that develop,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bon Jovi has been very supportive of his brother’s contributions to the band.
“He’s become an incredible man. He’s no longer anybody’s little boy or assistant,” he said.
In 2018, Bongiovi celebrated 25 years with Bon Jovi and shared a photo of himself with the band on his Instagram page.
In the documentary series, Bongiovi recounted the struggles the band went through when Richie Sambora stopped coming to a concert for personal reasons. He later left the band.
“As a tour manager, it was a scary moment because when you see someone who was a key member of this organization and is no longer there, we all thought we were going home,” he recalled.
“Jon is very good at preparing for the worst. There’s a reason why there’s a second guitarist,” Bongiovi later said.
Over the years, Bongiovi has shared photos of himself with his brother on Instagram. In some of the photos, he stands next to Bon Jovi as the artist performs, protecting him from the crowd.
“Always supporting him,” he captioned one post.
Matt Bongiovi is a proud father.
Bongiovi regularly shares photos of his children on Instagram. In December 2023, the proud father posted a photo of his son, whom he called his “best friend and mini-me,” to celebrate his son’s birthday.
“You make me proud every day,” he captioned the post.
In 2022, Bongiovi celebrated his son’s birthday with a series of photos, writing, “Happy Birthday to my non-MiniMe, my son Rocco. You make me proud every day!”
Bongiovi also has two daughters. In 2020, he reflected on being a daughter dad on National Daughters Day
“I am so blessed to have two beautiful daughters who I am proud to call Dad. Riley and Bella, I love you both,” he captioned the post.
