Sophie Cunningham rips fans, praises Caitlin Clark as face of the WNBA

Sophie Cunningham on Caitlin Clark being the face of the WNBA:

“When people try to argue that she’s not the face of our league or if our league would be where we’re at without her, you’re dumb as s***. You’re literally dumb as f***”In the first episode of Sophie Cunningham’s “Show Me Something” podcast, the Indiana Fever guard blasted fans, media, and fellow players that don’t recognize her teammate, Caitlin Clark, as the face of the WNBA.

Alongside Bravo star and co-host West Wilson, Cunningham went after the disrespect toward Clark.

“It literally, like pisses me off when people are like, ‘she’s not the face of the league’. What?” Cunningham said.

There is no denying the league-altering impact that Clark had in her 2024 Rookie of the Year award-winning campaign. The 2024 WNBA season saw the former Hawkeyes legend and NCAA all-time leading scorer shatter rookie records and deliver the most-watched WNBA season in its history.

When Cunningham asked Wilson what his “outsider” point of view is, he answered by saying he does not understand why the league collectively has been “bullying” Clark, despite the significant impact she has had in getting the WNBA where it is today.

“No, there’s really good, well-known people in our league. I’m not discrediting them. We have a lot of badasses in our league. Like, hell yeah to that. I’m all for that.

“But when people try to argue that she’s not the face of our league or if our league would be where we’re at without her, you’re dumb as (expletive),” Cunningham said.

In a pregame interview before Indiana’s 107-101 Wednesday night victory over the Phoenix Mercury from Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Cunningham described the podcast as an avenue where she can speak unfiltered and discuss the details of the WNBA that are not covered as closely by traditional sports media.

“It’s fun… You know, it’s unfiltered. And I think that’s something that everyone kind of wants to hear about. I think nowadays you just have to be so filtered and be so careful about how you say things, rather than what people want, which is ‘real’. People want positive things to cling on to.

“And this episode is called ‘Show Me’. It’s going to talk about really anything and everything. And it’s just somewhere for people to go and have a good laugh and relax. It’s nothing serious, and I think that just kind of fits my vibe,” Cunningham said
