A previously unseen Amy Winehouse portrait showing the singer just as her career took off is going on show for the first time at the National Portrait Gallery.
The picture was taken by fashion photographer Ram Shergill in 2003 after the release of her debut album Frank which won her critical respect before the 2006 album, Back to Black, made her a major international star.
Winehouse died at her Camden home in 2011 aged just 27 after a prolonged and public battle with drink and drugs.

The picture goes on show along with another from the same session as part of a display of the gallery’s Contemporary Collection, which also features portraits of other big names from the worlds of fashion and music including Blur, Kate Moss, Take That and Alexander McQueen with Isabella Blow.
There are also a series of pictures taken by young photographers including a 2017 portrait by Finnish artist Maija Tammi of visual effects expert Ben Morris.
Morris, who has worked on films such as War Horse and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is shown wearing a 3D facial motion capture head rig which is used to give computer generated characters a more human appearance.
Gallery director Dr Nicholas Cullinan said: “We are delighted to be able to bring out so many new and previously unseen works in our latest Contemporary Collection display.
“The works on display illustrate the diversity and vitality of 21st century portraiture. Individuals are represented in unique and surprising ways, in a range of media, intended to challenge our understanding of what portraiture is today.”
