Sophie Cunningham Sends Clear Message to Caitlin Clark After Fever Move

The Indiana Fever have gone all-in with building around All-WNBA point guard Caitlin Clark.

In addition to bringing back All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell, the Fever have made some significant additions to the roster. They have added forwards DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard to fill out their frontcourt. Indiana was also to add some shooting to surround Clark and her playmaking, bringing in guard Sophie Cunningham.

The Fever acquired Cunningham from the Phoenix Mercury in a multi-team trade, sending forward NaLyssa Smith and their 2025 first-round pick in return.

Cunningham has proven to be a threat from long-range, averaging 36.2% from distance for her career. In 2024, her production took a step back as she averaged 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

On Wednesday, Cunningham joined Jillian Carroll Letrinko on “Sports and Shenanigans” to discuss joining Clark and the Fever. The former Missouri Tigers star proceeded to share a message to her new running mate as the new season nears.

“I told the people upstairs I will be the Sabrina Carpenter any day to her Taylor Swift,” Cunningham said. “I am so excited for this. She’s just a great human, too. She has a lot of pressure and a lot of eyes on her shoulders. And she handles it so gracefully, and she’s just a great human. So I’m just excited to be a part of something like that. And she passes the ball, which I enjoy.”

Clark has not only seen a major shift to the Fever’s roster but also major to the staff. After losing to the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, Indiana elected to dismiss coach Christie Sides after two seasons with the organization.

The Fever replaced Sides with the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year Stephanie White — the coach of the same Sun team that eliminated Indiana last season. All in all, there certainly is a lot to be excited about in Indianapolis with the Fever in 2025.
