Sam Smith has spoken candidly about their struggle with body image issues over the years, and shockingly admitted he underwent liposuction at the age of just 12

The 32-year-old singer has spoken candidly about their body image issues over the years, and after they shot to fame in 2012, Sam struggled with their weight when thrust into the spotlight. In 2015, they shed three stone with help from nutritional therapist Amelia Freer after they confessed they were in a downward spiral following their Oscar win for the song Writing’s On The Wall for the James Bond movie Spectre in 2016.

The Oscar win catapulted Sam to worldwide stardom, and the singer admitted it was hard dealing with the huge fame. “After the Oscars, I started going out too much, not respecting myself, drinking loads and smoking,” they told Billboard in 2017. “I wasn’t looking after myself; I was going into a bit of a spiral. I’d lost contact with friends, with family. It wasn’t good.”

They shed three stone with the help of Amelia, and a personal trainer who they worked out with three times a week, but the singer – who came out as non-binary – made a heartbreaking confession in 2019 during an interview with Jameela Jamil on her podcast I Weigh. They revealed they had undergone liposuction at the age of 12, after suffering cruel bullying over their weight, and Sam confessed they were a “chubby” kid.

“I was so self conscious that it was affecting my mood and life everyday,” Sam said, as they explained a doctor told him he had “excess amounts of oestrogen” in their chest. “I had breasts. I had liposuction when I was 12 years old. That’s a big thing,” they explained, adding that initially, they were “really happy” about the surgery, but the effects didn’t last. “I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I haven’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal,” they added.

Sam previously admitted they “just love food”, and in 2015, just months into their new fitness regime, the Stay With Me hitmaker said their relationship with food will “be a battle for the rest of my life.” Now, the award-winning singer is determined to embrace their curves, and confidently flaunted their body in candid pictures on Instagram as they told their followers they had finally accepted themselves.

“Some may take this as narcissistic and showing off but if you knew how much courage it took to do this and the body trauma I have experienced as a kid you wouldn’t think those things,” they wrote. Speaking to the Sunday Times in 2022, it seems that Sam has finally beaten their body image demons, as they proudly stated: “I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fabulous. I’m finally getting a tan. I’m burnt in places I’ve never been burn
