Yaroslava Mahuchikh has just brought home the 2024 Olympic high jump gold medal for the Ukrainian team. And one of the secrets of this beautiful female athlete is to be able to sleep anywhere.

Winning Olympic gold thanks to… sleeping bag

Mahuchikh, 22, is no stranger to world athletics. Even this beautiful girl holds the world record for high jump. Last month, at the Wanda Diamond League also in Paris, she surpassed the 2m10 bar, surpassing the old record of 2m09 by Stefka Kostadinova (Bulgaria).

In Paris this time, Mahuchikh only needed a beam of 2m00 to win Olympic gold, because her competitor Nicola Olyslagers needed more jumps to overcome this milestone. Not many people are surprised by Machuchikh’s feat, but perhaps the most surprising thing is her special habit between her dances.

Mahuchikh slept soundly between rounds of competition

Just like Mahuchikh did in the high jump, she took the concept of taking breaks between performances to the next level in Paris. To the surprise of many spectators, she actually climbed into her sleeping bag, lying on a green mat to sleep between dances at the Stade de France (some thought she was meditating or calming). Apparently, this overseas woman has shown such calmness, coolness, and alertness that she can actually sleep while the competition is ongoing.

“I feel comfortable lying down and sometimes I can look at the clouds. Sometimes I can count numbers, 1,2,3,4, or inhale, exhale. It’s a way to relax, [and] not think about being [in] the stadium.”, Manuchikh told TIME about his routine between jumps.

Mahuchikh has had this special habit since 2018

According to the New York Times, Mahuchikh’s habit began in 2018, the year she won the High Jump Medal at the Youth Olympics. “Serhii Stepanov, who helped train her along with his wife, Tetiena Stepanova, proposed that sitting for too long between dances caused blood to accumulate in Mahuchikh’s legs,” the Times shared, “and from there the idea of sleeping bags was born. Every time Mahuchikh enters the high jump area during a competition, she carries a backpack containing a yoga mat, her sleeping bag, and a sock changer. Sometimes, she wears a hoodie.”

Mahuchikh said she uses a new sleeping bag every season. “I recommend all girls to have this rug and blanket because it is really comfortable to lie in different weather conditions. Because when it rains, it’s okay. It’s never hot because it’s a camping blanket,” Mahuchikh said.
