Now, go to the story:
It was a cold and windy day, and Officer Bob Sanders was nearing the end of his daily rounds. The last stretch he needed to cover was a shopping area, so it needed to be done on foot. Reluctantly, Bob parked his car, not knowing his day would take an unexpected turn.
Bob walked along the different shops, his collar up as the weather seemed to worsen with every step he took. Huddled in his coat, he looked around for signs of criminal activity or a person in need. When he was satisfied, Bob turned his gaze toward the shops, and then he saw it. Did he see that right? Bob frowned as he entered the secondhand store.
When Bob walked past, he thought he had seen a girl put something in her bag. Was she trying to steal them? “Hello, young lady,” Bob said softly. He was surprised to see how young she still was. The girl was startled by him, but Bob kneeled down and tried to comfort her by saying she didn’t have to worry.
“What are you doing here?” he asked. The girl shrugged and looked at the floor. But when Bob asked about her parents, her eyes shot up at him, and she kept staring. “Caring,” Bob repeated his question, but the girl stared at him without responding. So he got up and looked around for the girl’s parents. To his surprise, the only other person in the store was the owner. “Was the girl here alone?” Bob sighed as he realized there was just one thing for him to do.
Bob grabbed the girl’s bag and returned the shoes to the owner. “Let’s get you home,” he told the girl. When he pushed the door open, the wind almost blew it off its hinges. So he was happy to return to the car, unaware his day was about to take a drastic turn.
During the car ride, Bob noticed that the little girl felt more at ease. She began to look out of the window and moved around instead of staring at him. This compelled Bob to try and get her to talk again, but he had to be careful because her behavior had been very unpredictable up until this point. He turned the music a little lower and gently asked her name. The girl looked at him momentarily as if she weighed her options. “Lizzy Stevens,” she said eventually. Bob was taken aback for a moment as the girl immediately gave her full name, but it was a welcome surprise. Or so he thought.
Shortly after Lizzy shared her name, Bob called the station and asked for information about her. The station would return to him with the information, so Bob used that time to try to find out more about her by continuing their conversation. Not knowing what shocking truth would eventually be revealed, Bob was primarily interested in why Lizzy was trying to steal the shoes. But he was surprised by her answer.
“It was a present,” Lizzy said with a small voice. Confused, Bob asked what she meant by that, and she responded she was trying to get a present for her sister. “Sounds believable,” Bob thought. He quickly shook his head and got back to the conversation. Lizzy was finally talking, so maybe he didn’t have to wait for the station to share her information. But when Bob asked the girl where she lived, he immediately regretted it.
Because before he even finished the question, it happened again. In the corner of his eyes, Bob noticed how she stiffened up. She didn’t respond anymore, and when he looked over, Lizzy was gazing at him again. Bob sighed. Why did she behave like this? Everything seemed to go well as she was answering questions moments ago. Then it struck him.
At first, Bob thought her behavior was random, that the little girl was anxious and didn’t know what to do. But he noticed a pattern. It happened in the store, and now again, both times he asked about her parents and where she lived. But why does it cause her to react like this?
Off assertion for Officer Sanders, the portable radio called, shaking Bob out of his thoughts. Eager to know what they found, he quickly grabbed the walkie-talkie and asked if they found the girl’s address. Bob was happy to hear that they did, and when the station shared it, something peculiar happened.
When the station started to communicate, Lizzy was startled. Still, Bob noticed she was listening eagerly to every word that was said. When the station mentioned her address, Bob observed the girl carefully, looking for a reaction. And he was right to do so because she quivered slightly when she heard her address. A feeling of concern overcame him, and Bob started to worry seriously for Lizzy. Why was she behaving like this? Why did she shut down at the mention of her parents and home?
He started to doubt his decision to bring Lizzy to her house. Seriously, what was going on there? For a moment, Bob hesitated. What would be the wise thing to do? Then he shook his head. He would bring Lizzy home and talk to the parents, determined to get answers. He entered the address into the navigation system and drove off, unaware he would come to a shocking realization.
The navigation sent him in a whole different direction than he had expected. Because up to this moment, Bob thought the girl and her family would be poor. So when they entered a wealthy-looking neighborhood, he was confused. This situation was becoming weirder and weirder, and it raised many questions.
“Almost there,” he said to Lizzy. He was driving on autopilot as the questions flooded his brain. What was going on exactly? Why would Lizzy feel the need to steal $2 shoes when they could clearly afford them? Bob was happy he decided to bring Lizzy home because he hoped to get answers. He looked at the girl again, who was now staring at the road in front of her. Was she anxious to get back home? Bob’s hands clenched the steering wheel. He was going to clear this whole situation up when he talked to the parents, not knowing the surprise he would get.
“Here we are,” Bob said softly when he set the car in front of Lizzy’s house. She still did not talk to him and looked at her house. Bob followed her gaze inside, determined to get answers. He opened the car door, but before he could step out, Lizzy said something unexpected.
“How can I go back without the shoes?” she said with a small voice. Bob was taken aback by this comment and thought for a moment before answering. He assured her she could get her sister another present with the help of her parents. But then Lizzy revealed something incredible.
“I don’t have a sister,” Lizzy suddenly said. Bob closed the car door immediately, looked at her seriously, and asked what she meant. But nothing could have prepared him for her response.
“That’s what I’m supposed to say when I get caught,” Lizzy said. Bob’s mind raced. She was instructed to lie from the first moment he met the girl. Her
