Loretta Lynn’s First Granddaughter Passes Away After “Difficult Health Battle”

'I was writing about life. That's why I had songs banned' - Loretta Lynn: country music's original badass

While Loretta Lynn dedicated her life to country music, the singer showcased her amazing talent with songs like “You’re Lookin’ at Country”, “The Pill”, and “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Throughout the years, the country star solidified herself as a top talent in the genre. Winning awards and dominating the charts, Lynn also nurtured a growing family at home that included six children. Juggling fame and motherhood, Lynn used her life to influence her music. Sadly, Lynn passed away in October 2022. And recently, news broke that her first granddaughter, Lynn Massey, passed away.

Posting a picture of Massey on Loretta Lynn‘s official Instagram page, her team captioned the post, writing, “Betty Sue’s daughter Lynn Massey, Loretta’s first grandchild, passed away this week after a long and difficult health battle. Our family is so grateful for the prayers and love continually shown to us.”

Fans rallied around the family as they navigated the difficult time. “So very sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.” One person added, “I’m so deeply sorry….she’s with her Mama, Grandma & Grandpa now. May that bring you peace & comfort.”

Loretta Lynn And Betty Sue Were More Than Family

At just 16 years old, Lynn welcomed her first daughter, Betty Sue, into the world. When older, Betty Sue gave birth to two girls, which she named one Lynn Massey and the other Audrey Dyer. While struggling with emphysema over the years, in 2013, Betty Sue passed away. Besides being her daughter, Betty Sue also helped Lynn with country music as she became a talented songwriter.

Always taking time to remember her daughter, Lynn would post images and heartfelt messages online. In July 2022, she wrote, “Over the years Betty Sue worked with me a lot with the ranch and entertaining. She was an amazing songwriter, too. She loved people, she loved to cut up and she had fun wherever she was. She had a heart of gold and she thought everyone was important. People nor animals neither one went hungry if Betty Sue knew. She was just good to people—no matter who they were or what they had going on.”

Carrying the pain with her, Lynn concluded, “She was more than a daughter; she was a best friend.”
