The two-time world champion was on the hunt for a potential top-five qualification after the Red Bull of Sergio Perez and Mercedes of George Russell were out in Q1.

However, the Spanish driver was unable to make the impression that he had hoped for in the Q3 session as he qualified P7 ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll. Alonso found himself in an unusual situation during the red flag stoppage caused by Yuki Tsunoda’s crash in the final minutes.

The FIA decided to restart the session with just two and a half minutes remaining which meant that Fernando Alonso was unable to improve on his first timed lap. The 42-year-old was seen throwing his cap and jacket on the floor while complaining to the FIA official about the mishap.

An F1 fan on social media has revealed what they claim to be is the reason behind the Spaniard’s anger towards the governing body. The Aston Martin duo of Stroll and Alonso were accidentally called in the parc ferme behind the ‘ApexGP’ car.

The FIA allegedly got confused about the situation as the fictional team car was in the parc ferme conditions while the real qualifying session was still ongoing. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll’s cars were parked behind the ‘ApexGP’ car which meant that both drivers had to have their belts tightened by their team members under parc ferme conditions to further continue in the session.

While speaking to DAZN, the 42-year-old said:

“Going into the pitlane, Lance and I were put into parc ferme, they closed the pitlane and put us into parc ferme. We got out of the car, then they told us that Q3 was going to restart. We got back in the car, they buckled us in, and because I had no more tires, I didn’t go out again.”

“I had been improving by a tenth and a half until that last corner when the red flag came out and it probably doesn’t change anything. But this going into the parc ferme, then opening it again and that doesn’t normally happen.”

Fernando Alonso attacks the FIA for their ‘gross errors’ in the Hungarian GP qualifying session

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso stated that FIA made a ‘gross error’ in their handling of the red flag conditions at the Hungarian GP qualifying session last Saturday.

He said:

‘In Q3… The FIA sometimes gets it right and sometimes makes gross errors. Today they made one because they red-flagged when I was in the last corner, which is surprising. When there is an accident at [Turn 5] they normally wait for the cars to complete their laps, or that’s the spoken rule.” he added.

Fernando Alonso finished the main race at the Hungaroring on Sunday in P11 while Lance Stroll finished in P10 to bring in the sole point for the team.
