With Willie and Dolly on task, others gladly joined in to honor a legend and further share his music with the world.
A project that started in 2018 has finally reached the shelves for fans to enjoy. Petty Country honors the late Tom Petty as a significant songwriter and his love for Nashville and Country Music.
The album “Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty” was released in full on Friday, June 21, and is full of impressive country music stars. This stellar lineup honors the enduring legacy of rock icon Tom Petty.
Some of Petty’s closest friends curated the album and put together an album that blends the soul of Petty’s music with the unique styles of the various country artists that performed on the album.
Featuring impressive stars like Chris Stapleton, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Luke Combs and many more the album covers some of Petty’s great hits and also some timeless songs.
Each artist put their own personal touch on the music they chose to perform. Fans will hear “American Girl” performed by Dierks Bentley, “Free Fallin'” by The Cadillac Three featuring Breland and Dolly Parton’s version of “Southern Accents.”
Parton’s cover of “Southern Accents” brings a soulful, heartfelt twist to Petty’s original that only Dolly could do.
In an interview with CBS News, Dolly spoke about the song choice and performance.
“It picked me,” Parton said, referring to the single. “I loved Tom Petty and that was not a song that was one of his big records, but he did it on stage and it always tore the house down. People loved it. Because he was a Southern boy. I just sang my song and I could feel and see all those things around me and all the artifacts that they had there, his guitar, his clothes,” said Parton. “And I just thought, ‘Well, I hope he’d be proud of this.'”
Another standout track is Chris Stapleton’s rendition of “I Should Have Known It.” The cover opens the album with Stapleton’s powerful vocals and signature style.
With contributions from country legends and contemporary stars, “Petty Country” is a fitting tribute that captures the spirit and legacy of Tom Petty’s music.
