New photos show shocking extent of Tiger Woods’ leg injuries

Days after he missed the cut in The 152nd Open, new photos shared online have revealed the shocking extent of leg injuries sustained by Tiger Woods in a near-fatal car crash just over three years ago.

Woods carded rounds of 79 and 77 at Royal Troon as he failed to feature at the weekend in golf’s oldest major championship for the tenth time in the last 11 years.

On the plus-side, it meant he was able to fly home to the United States to follow son Charlie as he plays in the US Junior Amateur – a title won by Woods Snr on three separate occasions – for the first time.

The event, taking place at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan, got under way today, Charlie labouring to a 12-over 82 to be tied for 250th out of the 264 players, 17 shots behind early pace-setter Tyler Watts.

However, all eyes were on his 15-time major-winning father, who was amongst the crowds taking in the action – and, more specifically, his legs.

Woods, 48, hasn’t been seen bare-legged in public since he sustained catastrophic injuries in a car accident in February 2021.

Months after that, in an interview with Golf Digest, the former world No.1 revealed he almost lost his right leg as a consequence of the single-vehicle accident on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

“There was a point in time when, I wouldn’t say it was 50/50, but it was damn-near there if I was going to walk out of that hospital with one leg,” he revealed.

On the rare occasions he has been spotted wearing shorts, his leg has been covered by a sleeve. However, touring Oakland Hills today, he walked bare-legged, showing off his significant scars in the process.

Woods has made only ten PGA Tour starts since the accident.

After missing the cut at The Open on Friday, he confirmed that his next appearance will – fitness permitting – be the Hero World Challenge in December.

“I’d like to have played more [this year], but I just wanted to make sure that I was able to play the major championships this year,” he revealed. “I got a lot of time off to get better, to be better physically, which has been the case all year.

“I’ve gotten better, even though my results really haven’t shown it, but physically I’ve gotten better, which is great.

“I just need to keep progressing like that and then eventually start playing more competitively and start getting into kind of the competitive flow again.”
