Lewis Hamilton shows true feelings on sudden Mercedes upturn ahead of his Ferrari move

Race winner Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Mercedes attends the press conference after the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 07, 2024 in Northampton, England.

With his move to Ferrari now firmly on the horizon, Lewis Hamilton has given his honest thoughts about the recent improvement at Mercedes in the last few weeks

Lewis Hamilton has made it clear that he doesn’t regret his decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari at the end of the F1 season.

Hamilton’s triumph at the British Grand Prix encapsulated the sudden improvement of Toto Wolff’s team. He broke a long-standing F1 record of most victories at a single event.

Just a week prior at the Austrian GP, Mercedes had a stellar weekend at the Red Bull Ring, with George Russell taking the top spot and Hamilton finishing fourth. It’s becoming increasingly evident that the Brackley-based team currently boast superior cars to Ferrari.

Many fans believe this may have sounded some alarm bells in Hamilton’s mind. Yet, the Brit made it clear that he is happy with how things are going with Mercedes but is still excited to race for Ferrari.

“I think leaving when the chips are down would be the worst feeling for me,” Hamilton admitted during a Spanish TV interview. “But leaving when the chips are up or on their way up and I’ve been a part of helping progress this car to where it is today. That’s an amazing feeling. So I’m very proud of it and also excited for next year.”

Hamilton has previously dismissed any speculation that he’s having second thoughts about his commitment to Mercedes. After the Spanish Grand Prix, he made it crystal clear that he will not be changing his mind.

He said: “I have been with Mercedes since I was 13. I will always be a fan and a supporter of them. My job right now is to work as hard as I can with the crew that I have to try and move and develop the car in the right direction. Whatever course and trajectory the team is on for next year, there are things I hopefully will have been a part of and I am proud of that.

“My job next year will be to start with the other team, and they are doing a great job. They have had a difficult couple of races but let’s not forget they had a race win in Monaco (last month).

“I don’t know what is wrong with their car and why they are in the position they are in. But it doesn’t make me second-guess my decision at all.”

Despite trailing Max Verstappen by a considerable margin, Hamilton, alongside teammate George Russell, has shown promising signs of improvement, hinting at a potential surge in the latter stages of the season. The duo’s next shot at closing the gap will come this Sunday at the Hungarian GP, held at the iconic Hungaroring circuit.
