Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claimed that he would have still joined Ferrari for the 2025 season had the German team shown the current pace at the end of the 2023 season. The seven-time world champion made a shock move to join the Italian team at the beginning of the 2024 season, ending his 12-year stay with Mercedes, where he won six of his seven world championships.

The Brackley-based outfit seemed to have finally cracked the new generation of regulations in their third year, and have been battling at the front in the past couple of races. Ferrari, despite starting the season strong and getting two wins in the first ten races, have slipped back from the front and are currently the fourth-fastest team.

In the post-qualifying press conference on Saturday, when asked hypothetically about the current form of both teams being the same at the end of last season, Lewis Hamilton gave a one-word reply about his pending move and if he would have still joined Ferrari:

“Yes.”

The 39-year-old spoke about the improved performance of the W15 after finishing P2 in the British GP qualifying session and added:

“It was a great session. Naturally, the best session that we’ve had as a team to just have the real pace and be able to actually compete with the McLarens and the Red Bulls, I think is incredibly satisfying, just really a huge boost for the team.”

“And the car felt great, as George was saying, a huge congratulations to George for getting the pole. But to be on the front row, I think, is massive for our team. So many of them are here this weekend with their families. And it’s been a long time since we’ve had it. So this is a great feeling,” he added.

Lewis Hamilton previews his chances of winning the British GP on Sunday

Lewis Hamilton claimed that with a 1-2 for Mercedes in the qualifying, they as a team with George Russell in P1, have got an edge over the McLaren of Lando Norris, who is P3.

As per F1.com, the 39-year-old said:

“I feel confident in the car for tomorrow’s race. With both myself and George on the front-row, we have an advantage in trying to keep Lando behind.”

While speaking about his chances for a record-extending ninth win in Silverstone, Hamilton hinted in the press conference:

“Well, I think I was cautious with my set-up, more thinking to have a nice balance in the race rather than all for one particular lap. So I do think that the car will be good tomorrow, yeah,” he added.

Lewis Hamilton has not won a race in the sport since the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP when he was dueling it out against Max Verstappen in what was claimed to be a titanic tussle for the ages.
