Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and rookie WR Xavier Worthy are already making up for lost time.
Worthy missed the majority of OTAs and mandatory minicamp with a minor hamstring injury. That means he missed out on a portion of the offseason where timing and chemistry are built between a quarterback and his receivers.
The team even happened to share a first look at the budding connection between Worthy and Mahomes.
Now, rookie LB Swayze Bozeman being matched up against Worthy is a bit of a coverage mismatch. However, it’s good to see these two execute and get on the same page during a practice setting. Getting repetitions in after missing such time is the only way these two will be able to get on the same page for the 2024 NFL season.
According to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, this wasn’t the only pass that went Worthy’s way during practice. He says 4-of-6 passes thrown by Mahomes during 7-on-7 drills targeted Worthy. The rookie caught 50% of his targets, including the red zone touchdown shown above. Worthy also caught a touchdown from Carson Wentz during a different team period in practice.
Obviously, there is still a long way to go, but Mahomes was right when he said there will be “no easing” for the first-round draft pick. They’re throwing him right into the mix so that he can get comfortable with his new quarterback and the scheme in Kansas City. He’s getting an opportunity to take those mental reps that he got at OTAs and mandatory minicamp and put them to the test.
The rookie speedster is getting plenty of reps during this headstart, which he can use to build up the chemistry and timing with Mahomes after missing time with his hamstring injury. It’s something that will only intensify for Worthy when the veterans arrive ahead of the team’s first open training camp practice on Sunday, July 21.
