British media see Red Bull ‘falling apart’ after Verstappen argument
The day after the Hungarian Grand Prix, the British media not only covered Oscar Piastri ‘s first win in Formula 1 but also the furious Max Verstappen. Nothing went as planned for the Red Bull Racing driver and, to make matters worse, he also collided on track with Lewis Hamilton’s W15. Verstappen does not come off well in the British newspapers.
BBC
The BBC believes Verstappen made too much of a fuss when attempting to overtake Lewis Hamilton. “It was the climax of a bad-tempered race for Verstappen as he railed against Red Bull’s strategy choices, that first put him behind Hamilton and then at the second pit stop also behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.”
It was not the first time Verstappen had encountered his rival on the track. At an earlier stage, he had also tried to get past the W15. Even then, he did not succeed. “Verstappen complained about his car’s performance, lack of grip and the team’s pit-stop choices, and when he was chastised by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for going too hard too soon on his tyres after his final stop, he again swore.”
The Guardian:
At The Guardian, they think it was a “lively” post-race discussion at Red Bull. “McLaren’s debrief will be lively, as it will be at Red Bull as Verstappen too contributed to quite a show in Budapest. The world champion’s poor temper throughout was as clamorous as Norris’s quiet seething was constrained. Upgrades intended to give Verstappen the edge failed to deliver and he spent the race complaining about the handling of his car and furious at his team’s strategy. It ended in clumsy ignominy. Looking to make up places he charged at Hamilton on lap 63 and hit the British driver at turn one, launching his Red Bull into the air, but was not penalised.
Of greatest concern for Verstappen, however, will be that for all his title lead, even as the McLaren drama played out, both cars comfortably had the edge on him in Budapest.”
Daily Mail
The Daily Mail also discussed the exasperated Verstappen. “The Dutchman was angry all afternoon and his championship lead slipped to 76 points.” On the incident with Lewis Hamilton: “Verstappen chucked the car down the inside rashly. He accused Hamilton of steering under braking.
“There was also the case of Verstappen, in rising ire, complaining about his botched strategy. He was in the right on that, though his temper was hotter than his tyres. His mood had darkened from the moment he went off three abreast at the opening corner.”
The Sun:
Verstappen eventually finished fifth, behind Charles Leclerc, due to the contact with Lewis Hamilton. ” Max was livid throughout the race,” The Sun noted. “Battling with his old foe Hamilton wheel to wheel before clipping the Mercedes man’s tyre. The collision flipped the back of the Red Bull car up in the air before he careered off the track.”
Sky Sports
At Sky Sports, it reads, “After winning four of the first five races of the season, Verstappen appeared likely to continue the remarkable dominance of the sport he has enjoyed over the past two seasons but has instead been dragged into a thrilling battle. His failure to win on Sunday meant that it was the first time since the closing stages of his 2021 title battle with Hamilton that he had gone three successive races without a victory, while the two-race winless streak alone was his first since July 2022.”
