Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finally snapped his two-and-a-half-year drought after he won the British Grand Prix for a ninth time on Sunday. It has been a difficult start to his farewell season with the German team but in the past couple of races, he has looked more comfortable with the W15 which was evident from his P3 finish in Spain at the beginning of the triple header.

The seven-time world champion was unable to control his emotions and burst into tears after he crossed the line to claim his 104th race win in the sport. With his win in Silverstone, the 39-year-old broke multiple records in F1.

Below are five interesting facts about Lewis Hamilton’s win at the British GP:

#1 Lewis Hamilton became the oldest race winner of the 21st century

On Sunday, after 51 laps and taking the chequered flag in P1, the British driver became the oldest race winner in F1 in the 21st century aged 39 years and 182 days.

Hamilton last won in the sport at the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP, which was the penultimate race of his epic title tussle with Max Verstappen that year.

#2 First driver to win after 300 starts

With a career last 18 years in F1, the 39-year-old is currently third in the list of race starts behind Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen on 344 starts.

However, by winning the British GP, he became the first driver in the 300+ club to register a race win to his name. This feat has eluded drivers such as Alonso, Raikkonen, Michael Schumacher, and Jenson Button.

#3 First driver to win in 16 seasons in F1

Lewis Hamilton holds the record for most race wins (104) in the sport, and has won at least one race in 16 out of his 18 seasons in the sport. His past two campaigns in the sport were the only time where the top spot of the podium had eluded him.

Simultaneously, he also has the record of being the only driver to win in 15 consecutive seasons in the sport, a feat he achieved from 2007 to 2021.

#4 Ninth victory at the Silverstone circuit

Lewis Hamilton already holds the record for most wins at Silverstone but on Sunday after he won at the iconic track, he became the first driver in history to have nine wins at a single track in their career.

He previously held the record with Michael Schumacher, who won eight times at Magny-Cours and Hamilton himself who has 8 wins in Hungary.

#5 Took victory on the weekend when Mercedes won for the first time in 1954

Lewis Hamilton gave a fitting gift to the Mercedes F1 team as he won on the 70th anniversary of the team’s first race win in F1 in 1954 with Juan Manuel Fangio.

He and the German team have been the most successful driver-team combination in history, registering 83 wins and eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships, with the Brit winning six driver’s titles with the Brackley-based team.
