‘Don’t worry, mister. We’ll win it all’: Why Barca fans should thank Andres Iniesta for off-the-pitch role in 2008-12 team success
Barcelona won it all in the 2008-2009 season thanks to Pep Guardiola’s innovations but the legendary coach could have never implemented these changes, as Andres Iniesta reveals in his autobiography ‘The Artist: Being Iniesta’.
Here’s how it happened:
Barca lost 1-0 to Numancia and drew with Racing 1-1 in Guardiola’s first 2 matches at the helm of the Catalan club. However, Andres Iniesta supported the coach and urged him to stick to his philosophy.
The iconic midfielder told the manager, as quoted by The Mirror: “Don’t worry, mister. We’ll win it all. We’re on the right path. Carry on like this, okay? We’re playing brilliantly, we’re enjoying training. Please, don’t change anything.”
Iniesta finished his speech in a rather unusual way, screaming: “Vamos de puta madre! This year we’re going to steamroller them all!”
By the way, Pep recalled he was touched and amazed by Iniesta’s heartfelt statement.
In his own book, the Blaugrana legend confessed: “Andres’ message was powerful. How could I forget that?”
“I can still see him standing there at the door, looking at me. “De puta madre.” And then he left. I thought: “Well if Andres says so…”
Eventually, Barca won all 6 trophies available in 2009, claiming the legendary Sextuple.
