‘Tomb Raider’ Live-Action Series to Begin Filming in 2026, Sophie Turner Confirmed as Lara Croft
TombRaider live-action series is officially set to begin production on January. 19, 2026 with Sophie Turner as Lara
The “Tomb Raider” live-action series at Amazon Prime Video is getting ready to shoot.
The series adaptation of the video game franchise is officially set to begin production on Jan. 19, 2026. In addition, Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed for the first time that Sophie Turner will star in the series as Lara Croft. The show was originally greenlit at Prime Video in May 2024, with Turner’s involvement first reported in November of that year. The show was first reported as being in development at the streamer in January 2023.
As previously reported, Phoebe Waller-Bridge will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer on the series. But now, Chad Hodge has boarded the show as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge. Jonathan van Tulleken will serve as director and executive producer.

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Turner is the latest high-profile actress to take on the role of Croft. The globetrotting adventurer was previously portrayed onscreen in two films by Angelina Jolie and in another by Alicia Vikander.
“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft,” Turner added. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
The series is executive produced by: Crystal Dynamics; Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins via Wells Street Productions; Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen; Michael Scheel; Hodge; van Tulleken; and Legendary Television. The series is produced by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios. Waller-Bridge is currently under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios.

The “Tomb Raider” series was developed under a pact between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios which comes via Story Kitchen’s first-look deal with the studio to develop additional “Tomb Raider” stories into series and films.
“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios. “We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved ‘Tomb Raider’ legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”
Hodge’s recent writing credits include the films “Single All the Way” and “The Darkest Minds,” as well as the TV series “Good Behavior.” He also previously created shows like “Wayward Pines,” “The Playboy Club,” and “Runaway.” van Tulleken has previously helmed episodes of “Shogun,” “Dope Thief,” “Upload,” and “Top Boy.”
Waller-Bridge is repped by UTA, Independent Talent, McEwan & Penford, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Turner is repped by CAA, Independent Talent Group, and Public Eye Communications. Hodge is repped by WME, Anonymous Content, and Ziffren Brittenham. Tulleken is repped by WME, Untitled, and Independent Talent. Story Kitchen is repped by WME & Pryor Cashman.
