The film, titled Amy, is directed by British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, who is best known for his 2010 documentary about Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. Amy tells the story of Amy Winehouse’s life from childhood to her rise to fame as one of the world’s top singers and her death in 2011. Kapadia will bring the film to the Cannes Film Festival in May to compete in the Documentary category and is scheduled to be officially released in July this year.
However, a representative of Amy Winehouse’s family said that the filmmakers’ perspective was “unfair” in suggesting that the American singer’s relatives had turned their backs on her in the final years of her life: “This is a great opportunity for people to understand Amy better, but it contains details that are not true. The stories in the film are made up of many interviews with people around Amy, but they are people who did not have much contact with her in her final years and this is not enough for them to describe everything in the most objective way”.
Even in an interview with The Sun, Mr. Mitch Winehouse, the singer’s father, said he “felt sick” when he first saw the film: “Amy would be very angry when she found out, this is not what she wanted. I am portrayed as a father who abandoned her, and there is no image of the family around Amy in her final years”.
Mr. Mitch Winehouse also confirmed that he would consider suing the producers if they did not cut out the details that misrepresented him.

In response to the reactions of Amy Winehouse’s family, the filmmakers emphasized that when making this film, they had “the full support of the singer’s family as well as approaching everything in the most objective way”: “We interviewed more than 100 people from her family, friends, former partners, and those who worked with her to build the story”.
Amy Winehouse is one of the rare singers to win up to 6 Grammy awards. However, her life began to fall into crisis when she became addicted to alcohol and drugs. She died in 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning, shocking and mourning fans around the world.
