Hustlers costume designer has revealed the secrets behind the sensational outfit worn by Jennifer Lopez at the beginning of the movie — and the designer admitted he was at first worried to show it to the actress because the outfit was so small.

JLo, 50, stunned audiences at the very beginning of Hustlers — a movie following four strippers conning wealthy men — when she appeared on screen in a silver bodysuit and nine-inch heels.

Costume designer Mitchell Travers told Vanity Fair a lot of thought went into the outfit to exude the proper amount of s3x appeal while still sticking to the movie’s R rating.

‘I knew that this was always going to be the sequence that needed to leave the audience with their jaws on the floor,’ he told the publication. ‘I knew it [had] to absolutely floor the audience, and let them know that this is not going to be like any movie that they’ve seen before.’

JLo’s revealing outfit was necessary, as she was performing an intense dance sequence at a strip club for the scene.

But there were concerns that Mitchell’s designed outfit could reveal a little too much of the actress during the performance number.

‘I had this fabulous tailor who hand-sewed these little rhinestone chains on to this tiny little white bodysuit,’ he said, adding. ‘We did a lot of research and development to find something that could [stretch in every direction during Lopez’s dance].

‘It’s performance wear, and really had to work for that sequence. We did a number of fittings on it. It is tailored within an inch of its life, completely custom for her.’

Prior to performing her routine onstage, JLo was hand-sewn into the costume to ensure it covered all the right places while she danced.

‘We had to hand-sew [the costume] on her onstage, so that she could make sure that nothing was going to come off.’ Mitchell explained.

‘She was doing [this dance] for this whole crowded room of background actors. It takes a lot for someone to be that vulnerable in a space where everyone is watching, and the cameras are rolling, and she’s got a few takes to nail it. I mean, you see what she created with that moment. It was an incredibly proud [day] for a lot of us.’

That scene, which came just 10 minutes into the movie, was an important one for JLo and her character because it set the tone of the woman’s status as a veteran stripper.

JLo’s character was showing Constance Wu’s character how was done to stun a crowd at the strip club.

In a video released on JLo’s YouTube page at the beginning of September, she detailed the amount of hours she trained for that one shot before filming.

The video, titled Making of Hustlers: Conquering the Pole, gave fans a glimpse into the actress’ world when preparing for the film. JLo confessed the skill was ‘definitely one of the hardest things ‘she’s done physically’.

JLo hired a professional pole dancer to train her for six weeks ahead of filming the important scene. This entailed installing a pole into JLo’s home so she could practice all the moves whenever she needed to.

‘It’s rough on your body. It’s real acrobatics, but I’m just trying to learn the mechanics right now,’ JLo said during the behind-the-scenes footage.

‘Strippers have lots of time to practice. They’re there every night…So they start learning little by little, but we have to do a crash course.’

She added: ‘I mean, this is just as hard as anything I’ve ever learned. It might be one of the hardest.’

After JLo trained for six weeks with her teacher, she was then ready to perform the routine onstage in the costume designed by Mitchell.

But he confessed to Vanity Fair to being nervous ahead of the filming to show JLo the costume he created for the moment.

‘So I held it up, and I said, “I know that this is crazy, but I really believe in this,”‘ he detailed. ‘And she said, “Let’s go. I think I do too.”  She put it on, and she turned to me…I got to know her well, and there’s a look in her eyes when I know we found it… And she gave me the look.’

This same conversation happened when he revealed the nine-inch heels JLo would be sporting for the dance number, which Mitchell said the actress walked in as if she were wearing ‘flip-flops’.

The moment came together to perfectly illustrate the veteran status of JLo’s character in the strip club,

Since the movie was released over the weekend, it has already garnered JLo Oscar buzz for her performance.
