Patrick Mahomes reveals he can’t be around Travis Kelce for more than two days after return to Kansas City Chiefs camp

Mahomes’ comments came after the Chiefs players recently returned for training camp

DESPITE their well-known friendship, Patrick Mahomes has revealed that in some instances, he needs time away from Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs teammates have a well-documented friendship that has seen them travel together, star side by side in commercials, and even open a restaurant.

However, even the best of friends occasionally need some time apart, and the same is the case for Mahomes and Kelce.

In a recent interview with his Chiefs predecessor Alex Smith on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Mahomes joked that when it comes to golf, Kelce isn’t the best influence.

“I’m going to stay away from Travis,” Mahomes said of playing with Kelce at the Lake Tahoe American Century Celebrity Golf Championship Tournament.

“He gets me off my game. He’s a bad influence.

“By Day 3 I’m just like, I can’t be with him for more than two days.”

While Mahomes – who recently returned to the Chiefs’ facility for training camp – skipped the 2024 event, he has made four previous appearances.

This included a 38th-placed finish in 2020 – his best to date.

As for Kelce, he’s made six appearances, with a 58th placed in 2020 his highest finish.

Former tennis star Mardy Fish won the 2024 event.

Mahomes’ decision to take a year away was a calculated one, telling Smith his “goal was to take an offseason off of all the tournaments and I’m coming back next year with a vengeance.”

Despite this, he doesn’t believe he’ll challenge for the win when he returns, saying, “I’m not gonna win Tahoe, but I’m gonna compete.”

Mahomes has the advantage of having built a new Missouri mansion with a golf hole in his backyard.

He explained that this had led to improvements in his short game, although he is “still yet to hit a hole-in-one on that hole.

“It’s 130 yards. I’ve gotten it close. I’ve hit a 1,000 minimum golf balls and I’ve gotten really close but never gotten one in.”

This has proven to be a wise addition to his stunning new home, noting how Mahomes has been teaching his two eldest children, Sterling and Bronze to play.

“I’ve tried to threaten Brittany (his wife) – because she doesn’t like to golf – I said, ‘You know, one day I’m gonna take the kids and we’re gonna go golf, and she said, ‘Please do,'” he joked.

Not only has he been showing them how to swing the club, but he’s also managed to make tidying up afterward a game in of itself.

“I’ve gotten smart as a dad,” Mahomes commented.

“We get down there: ‘Who gets the most golf balls?’…The bunker has become a big sandbox for the kids.”
