Soto Reveals Mets Weren’t Highest Bidders

Money isn’t everything. In a sneak peek at his interview with Abriendo Sports, Juan Soto noted that the Mets didn’t offer the most money in the superstar’s sweepstakes this past offseason. While the full interview will drop on Sunday at noon ET, Soto mentioned it was a group decision when deciding to sign with the Mets.

Juan Soto says some teams offered more money than Mets in free ...

It’s noteworthy the Mets didn’t offer the most money, mostly because Soto’s contract with the team is still the largest in professional sports history. The 15-year, $765 million contract sent shockwaves throughout the sports world as it eclipsed Shohei Ohtani‘s 10-year, $700 million contract that he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers just one year prior.

Soto confirmed the final teams in the running for his services. While the Mets were his choice, the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Blue Jays were all serious contenders. It’s unknown who made the largest offer, and likely will remain unknown. However, in the teaser clip, they asked Soto that question.

Like so many recent Mets, Soto stressed the organization’s commitment to family and culture in his press conference as a reason he signed with the team– something highly appealing to many players. It’s a stark comparison to years past when the team struggled to acquire marquee names. Now, because of the culture owners Steve and Alex Cohen have curated, players like Soto choose Queens as a destination regardless of money.
