Tommy Lee Calls Out Jealous Headliners, Praises OZZY for Supporting MOTLEY CRUE

Tommy Lee Praises Ozzy for Not Being Jealous of MOTLEY CRUE Like Other Headlining Bands

In a heartfelt tribute, Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee has spoken out about Ozzy Osbourne’s generosity during their early days on tour. In an interview with The New York Times, Lee shared how Ozzy’s supportive attitude helped shape Mötley Crüe’s success—and left a lasting impression.

“Ozzy Is a Big Reason Why We’re Still Here”

Reflecting on the early ’80s, Lee credited Ozzy for helping the band thrive.

“Ozzy is a real big reason why we’re still here,” Lee said. “I can’t emphasize enough how generous he was when we toured together in the early ’80s.”

His comments underline the rare support Osbourne offered to younger bands, at a time when many headliners kept resources to themselves.

Sharing the Stage — And the Spotlight

Lee explained how Ozzy’s touring philosophy stood in sharp contrast to the norm.

“Usually headliners reserve a bunch of lights and give openers a fraction of the PA system, so the opening band isn’t as loud as the headlining act,” he continued. “Ozzy was like, ‘You can have all the lights, have all the sound, have a f*cking blast.’ And that really moved me. I never really experienced that sort of generosity and equality that he wanted for everybody.”

This level of access was unheard of—and helped establish a bond between the artists and their fans early on.

The Power of Stage Presence

In addition to his behind-the-scenes kindness, Osbourne’s stage presence captivated audiences.

“He has this sort of signature move,” Lee explained. “He kind of jumps in one place and claps. There’s an evil smirk on his face as he’s doing it, but I think the evil smirk is happiness because the place is going bananas. It’s letting the audience know that you are enjoying it just as much or more than they are. That connection’s important, man. Otherwise, you’re just kind of doing it for yourself.”
