When James Gunn took over the reins of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, a portion of the fandom hoped that Henry Cavill would keep his Man of Steel role and continue in the newly rebooted DCU.
This didn’t happen, however, as the actor soon revealed that he won’t be going forward with the role. At that point, Gunn already had plans for a new ‘Superman’ movie. This upcoming flick won’t be an origin story and will focus on a younger Superman, Cavill just didn’t fit the bill.
The fandom is still debating on whether Gunn is to blame for Cavill losing the role or not. David Corenswet is set to be the new cinematic Superman, but before he was selected, naturally plenty of actors were interested in the role and auditioned for it and one of them was Tom Brittney.
Tom Brittney is a British actor best known for his role in the TV series ‘Grantchester,’ where he plays the character Will Davenport.
He joined the show in 2017 and became a fan favorite for his portrayal of a young vicar. Before ‘Grantchester,’ Tom appeared in a few other TV shows and films, including ‘Outlander’ and ‘The Syndicate.’ He’s also been involved in stage productions. In addition to acting, the actor has shown interest in directing and producing.
Brittney was notably one of the actors to audition for the Superman role, and recently during his ‘Hellish’ podcast appearance, he commented on his Superman audition, admitting that he was among the last three candidates for the role. He admitted that he ripped Cavill’s Superman suit while auditioning.
It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit. It was an actual suit. I don’t know how much I’ve signed away. It was an insane process. I’ve met James Gunn before because I screen-tested for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’
On the fact that he ripped the suit, the actor commented on the process:
It takes about half an hour to get into it – to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it..
Brittney obviously did not get the role but he is set to appear in ‘Back in Action’ action movie set to release in 2025 starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz.
