British singer Amy Winehouse is back in the spotlight in the new film “Back to Black.”
The biopic chronicles her rise to fame, her heartbreak, and the personal struggles she faced before her death.
British actress Marisa Abela plays the late Amy Winehouse in the biopic, and she also does all the singing.
Here’s a crazy fact: Abela didn’t sing before the film.

But she worked hard with a vocal coach and brought the singer’s story to life in a way that left fans in awe of her performance.
“It’s a huge responsibility and an honor,” Abela said. “I think if I stopped to really let the fear set in, it would have been too much. It wasn’t until we finished filming, and I started talking to people about it, that I realized I had done something crazy by taking on this role.”
Abela said she learned a lot from Winehouse as she learned about her life and story.
“She was the embodiment of a creative individual,” Abela said. “Amy’s raw authenticity, her courage, her artistry. I think that’s a lesson for all of us.”
Winehouse died at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning.
Her death shocked fans and the industry.
Winehouse won five Grammys in 2008, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rehab” and Best New Artist.
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson said she wanted the film to celebrate Winehouse, not judge her.
“We knew she had a tragic end, but I wanted people to come in and immediately want to play the music and remember her,” Taylor-Johnson said, “and just listen to it again with this new perspective.”
Abela added that the reason she put her “blood, sweat and tears” into the role was because she knew exactly what Winehouse meant to people.
“Back to Black” is in theaters now.
