In a TikTok posted Monday night, the rapper recites the campaign line in an exaggerated Southern drawl: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” In the parody, she replaces “blue” with a drawn-out “bleee.” The clip has racked up nearly 3.5 million likes within 24 hours.

Sweeney stars in American Eagle’s fall 2025 campaign, which hinges on the pun “great genes” vs “great jeans.” While some interpreted the ad as a playful slogan, others online have accused it of echoing eugenics and racialized messaging. One TikTok user, who has posted multiple videos on the topic, claimed, “It is one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we’ve seen and heard in a while.” That user’s videos have amassed over a million views.

The backlash has largely played out on TikTok, where many users dismissed the outrage as manufactured. In one comment that gained traction, a user wrote, “Y’all are mad at Sydney Sweeney because she’s white, she’s blonde, she’s blue-eyed and she looks good. I am DEI’d out.”

American Eagle and Sweeney have not publicly responded. Sweeney’s brand partner, Baskin-Robbins, has since disabled comments on TikTok posts featuring the actress.
