Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 from Jeezy Turns 20 Years Old

Jeezy or also known as Young Jeezy, dropped a couple of independent projects in 2001 and 2003. After the buzz and reception of his Come Shop with Me in 2003, Jeezy would sign with Def Jam. Jeezy also signed with Bad Boy as part of Boyz n Da Hood. The Boyz n Da Hood project dropped a month before Jeezy released his major label debut. Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 was the name of his debut project, and it turns 20 years old today. Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, selling 172,000 copies in the first week. And Then What would become his first single and it featured the legendary Mannie Fresh from Cash Money Records. And Then What was one of the many great records from the album.

Soul Survivor was the name of the second single, and it featured Akon. This song is featured on Def Jam: Icon, a video game for the Xbox 360 & PS3. A music video was produced to promote the single. The video was directed by Benny Boom and is heavily inspired by Paid in Full. Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron, Fabolous, DJ Clue, Zab Judah and Big Meech all make cameo appearances.  Soul Survivor was a huge record, and it sold over three million copies. The third single for Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 was called Go Crazy. Go Crazy had three different versions of the track released. There was one with Jeezy doing all three verses. After that, Jeezy dropped one with Jay-Z and Fat Joe on the remix. The official single only featured Jay-Z. All three versions are nice, but it didn’t have Soul Survivor success.

The fourth and final single from the album was My Hood. My Hood was released at the end of 2005, and it made its way to several mixtapes during this time. Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 sold over two million copies. In 2012, Complex called the album one of the classic albums of the last decade. Several tracks on my personal Jeezy Greatest Hits Volume 1 and 2 were from this project. Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 is one of my favorite albums from any genre. Jeezy is currently on tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album. Check out my top 5 tracks from this classic album below.
