“I warn her,” Clarkson added of disciplining her 3-year-old daughter, River Rose, with spanking. “I was like, ‘Hey, I’m going to spank you if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous,’ and honestly, it really helped. She doesn’t do that stuff as often anymore.”

In a statement on its website, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents “not spank or use other physical punishment” when disciplining children.

“It only teaches aggressive behavior and becomes less effective if used frequently,” the AAP said.

“Instead, use time-outs appropriately for young children,” the group added. “Discipline older children by temporarily taking away favorite privileges, such as sports activities or playing with friends. If you have questions about disciplining your child, talk to your pediatrician.

However, a 2016 poll by the consulting firm Gallup found that 62 percent of parents in the U.S. approve of spanking children.

Clarkson said she believes there is a “fine line” when it comes to spanking, but told a Rochester-based radio station, “I believe in spanking, so you might catch me spanking my kids at the zoo.”
