That’s Dr. Bon Jovi to you.

Sayreville native Jon Bon Jovi  received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Pennsylvania at Penn’s 263rd Commencement on Monday, May 20 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

“It’s better to be a doctor than be in need of a doctor,” said Bon Jovi on social media after the ceremony.

The rocker’s musical achievements and humanitarian endeavors, including the Soul Kitchen community restaurants in Red Bank and Toms River, were cited.

“The pay-it forward model (of the Soul Kitchen) serves in-need and paying customers with dignity and encourages their active participation through volunteer services,” said University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann, after the grads stopped singing “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

Bryan Stevenson, the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, AL was the commencement speaker.

Bon Jovi previously received a Doctorate of Humanities from Monmouth University in 2001.
