The EGOT winner, 46, spoke with PEOPLE at The Hollywood Reporter and Social Impact Fund’s 2025 Social Impact Summit on Thursday, July 24, and gave an update on how his son Miles, 7, is doing after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year.
“The younger ones don’t really know what’s going on, but when they see the devices and things he has to wear, they sometimes have questions,” Legend tells PEOPLE.
“His condition is also building grit in him, and as a family, I think it’s building it in us as well because we are all rallying together to support him.”

Earlier this month, Legend spent some time with Miles as the two attended a diabetes family camp together. The dad of four shared a series of photos on his Instagram as he rounded up his time at DYF. In the sweet pictures, Legend could be seen smiling with Miles in front of huge trees, hiking in the forest and relaxing together in their cabin.
“I took Miles on a boys’ trip to a wonderful diabetes family camp @dyf_t1d. Loved having one-on-one time with him at Yosemite,” Legend wrote in his caption. “And it was so cool for him to be around a bunch of kids his age and counselors with diabetes. I learned a lot and I’m so grateful to everyone involved.”
This past September, Legend spoke with PEOPLE and echoed his recent comments, sharing that their son’s diagnosis had made them even “stronger” as a family.
“My personality is one where I’m very optimistic and I’m very practical,” Legend said. “As soon as I learned that he had this I knew it was going to be life-changing for him and for us, but I’m also like, ‘We can do this.’ We’ve got great advice and lots of people offering support to help us learn.”
“This speaks to us feeling like a team,” he said of Teigen, “and knowing we can do this together. It just makes us stronger.”
As for how Miles was doing at the time, Legend said he’s “early in his diagnosis, and when you’re early, your insulin is still doing some of the work that it needs to do.”
“But as the disease progresses, it’s going to get to a point where we really need to monitor everything, count carbs, give him insulin beforehand. We just have to be more aware,” the dad of four added.
