John Legend and Chrissy Teigen Are ‘Committed’ to a Couple’s Staycation Once a Month to ‘Reset’ Away from Kids

“I think you have to be intentional about having me-time or couple time so you can focus on your mental health together, your relationship,” Legend said

John Legend makes sure to put in some self-care time with wife Chrissy Teigen.

The “All of Me” singer, 45, revealed during a panel discussion at the Voices of Beauty Summit on Tuesday that spending some alone time with his wife is how he relaxes and de-stresses amid his busy work and home schedule.

“Chrissy and I have committed to doing a staycation one night a month to get away from the kids,” Legend shared, referring to their children, Luna Simone, 7,  Miles Theodore, 5,  Esti Maxine, 1, and Wren Alexander Stephens, 9 months.

Legend said the kids do have their phone number during that time so that they can still call if they need anything, but he also stressed the importance of “taking that time” for themselves individually and in their relationship so that it can continue to flourish.

“Getting away from the kids, going to a spa and just [enjoying] each other’s company,” Legend, who was promoting his personal care brand Loved01, explained. “… If you don’t take those moments to reset [and] if you don’t intentionally take those moments, I think then time can get away from you because you’re always going to have something to do. You’re always going to have work to do.”

“And so I think you have to be intentional about having me-time or couple time so you can focus on your mental health together, your relationship, all of that,” he continued. “And I think that’s important.”

The panel moderator noted that those moments of self-care don’t always come “organically” and have to be focused upon, to which Legend agreed.

“You have to plan it. Yeah, you have to have to be mindful of it and intentional about it, I think,” he said.

Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of the panel, Legend opened up about creating Loved01 with the “experiences of melanin-rich people” in mind.

“We thought that was an important market and an important customer who needed to be celebrated, studied, paid attention to and given products that were focused on them,” he said. “Then we wanted to make sure that unlike a lot of celebrity brands, we would make it affordable and accessible for everybody.”

Legend and Teigen are also passing on self-care rituals to their kids. “Chrissy and I participate in bath time with them a lot, and they’re using Loved01 to moisturize,” he said. “They were part of our initial campaign, and so it’s really part of the ethos of our brand, that personal care ritual and self-care ritual is also a family affair.”

As for the singer himself, Legend says he’s perfected his skincare routine. “I usually will use the face and body cream wash and the exfoliating cleanser, and then I also use our face and body cleansing bar. I use our wipes,” he detailed. “Only thing I really don’t use very often is our shave cream, because I don’t shave very often.”

Earlier this week, the couple appeared to have one of their vacation nights together without the kids during an outing at Donatella Versace’s new Palazzo Versace hotel in Macau.

Teigen shared photos from the night of herself in a black mini-dress teamed with a small white handbag and Versace sandal heels, while her husband wore a pink gingham-patterned coat and a pair of black pants. The Cravings author also shared glimpses of their date night at the event, including a shot of herself and the Grammy winner walking hand-in-hand at the hotel while classical music played.

Commenting under his wife’s post, Legend left three love heart eye emojis, “😍😍😍.”

The pair, who married in 2013, were also spotted shopping together in L.A. in February and stepping out for a date night in matching black looks in December to celebrate Legend’s 45th birthday
