‘Lifelong Dream’: Henry Cavill Excited to Realize His Warhammer 40K Adaptation

Warhammer 40K live-action star Henry Cavill revels in his boyhood dream to star in the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game series as it progresses in development.

Speaking with Collider, Cavill expressed how “special” the opportunity is to be the central figure in the Warhammer 40K cinematic universe for Amazon Studios, revealing his excitement about the passion project. According to Cavill, there will be “big things happening” with the upcoming series of projects as he gets to bring a favorite game of his childhood into the live-action world. “I have loved Warhammer since I was boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility,” he said. “I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh-on lifelong dream come true.”

Based on the popular miniature wargame, Henry Cavill says Amazon’s upcoming Warhammer 40K adaptation is the start of a greater cinematic universe.

Warhammer 40K Was Officially Greenlit in December

Cavill’s Warhammer 40K cinematic universe officially got greenlit last December after the agreement between Games Workshop and Amazon was signed, officially kicking off the pre-production process for the titular TV show. The British actor has long expressed his interest in depicting Warhammer 40K on the screen and was attached to the upcoming series in 2022, a year before its official confirmation. The upcoming series will precede future films based on the popular miniature wargame.

Warhammer 40K won’t be the first project Cavill will star in that’s based on the video game as he featured in the first three seasons of The Witcher, derived from the eponymous fantasy action role-playing series and books penned by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Cavill played Geralt of Rivia throughout his run in the series before handing the lead role to Liam Hemsworth, who will feature as the central character for Seasons 4 and 5.

It’s unknown which character Cavill will play in the Warhammer 40K universe. However, not only will he be a prominent on-screen force for the shows and films under the Warhammer 40K umbrella, but he will also be an executive producer. Previous attempts to adapt the game to TV and film proved fruitless, with the last feature-length project, 2010’s Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie, being received poorly after its straight-to-DVD release.

Cavill is currently promoting his spy action comedy film, Argylle, which sees him star as the titular secret agent. Argylle is the first of an intended trilogy by director Matthew Vaughn, though the opening movie sees Cavill’s character in more of a background role, with Bryce Dallas Howard’s Elly Conway taking centerstage. The film also features Ariana DeBose, Bryan Cranston, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Sam Rockwell and Samuel L. Jackson.

No release window has been confirmed yet for the Warhammer 40K TV show.
