Henry Cavill’s $75 Million Forgotten James Bond Dupe Is a Global Streaming Hit

Henry Cavill may have been replaced as Superman in James Gunn’s DCU, but two years after he debuted as the Man of Steel, he starred in a spy thriller that’s become a global streaming sensation. Cavill stars alongside Hugh Grant and Alicia Vikander in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the 2015 globe-trotting adventure following Napoleon Solo, a CIA agent who joins forces with a KGB operative to go on a top-secret mission. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is currently streaming on Netflix, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the streamer at the time of writing, charting in several countries around the world. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. grossed $110 million at the box office against a $75 million budget, and it earned scores of 68% from critics and 73% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Guy Ritchie wrote the script for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with help from David C. Wilson, Jeff Kleeman, and Lionel Wigram, and Ritchie also directed the film, which has been likened to James Bond movies of old. It’s a remake of the 1960s TV show of the same name starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. marked the first time Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill worked together, but the duo reunited two years ago for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the period action epic that also stars Reacher’s Alan Ritchson. They’ll even reunite later this year for In the Grey, another action thriller featuring Jake Gyllenhaal. Ritchie is also known for his work on Jason Statham’s recent action vehicles such as Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Wrath of Man, as well as for directing the classic 2019 crime thriller, The Gentlemen.

Why Did Henry Cavill Leave ‘The Witcher’?

Henry Cavill departed The Witcher at the end of Season 3, leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia to go to Liam Hemsworth for the final two seasons of the Netflix show. Cavill has cited creative differences as his reason for leaving the series, even though there have been other fans who have tried to push the narrative that his departure is related to Superman commitments. Cavill’s exit has not sat well with fans of the show, who are already on thin ice with the Netflix series after watching more and more deviations.
