Paige Spiranac Breaks Down The Different Types Of Grass And Hazards On A Golf Course
In the latest video from her “The Beginner’s Guide to Starting Golf” YouTube series, Paige Spiranac discusses the different types of grass (fairways, greens, and rough) and the types hazards on a golf course (water and sand).
“People often forget that these things aren’t obvious to new golfers, so I wanted to make sure no piece of golf terminology went uncovered!” she says in the video’s description.

For all you golf noobs out there, Paige explains in the video, “I first want to talk about the grass. So, shorter grass, a fairway cut is this [bends down and rubs short grass].
“As you can see it’s a little bit shorter and it’s not that long,” she begins. “From the fairway cut, which is shorter, you have rough, which is longer and so it’s a penalty. So when your ball lands in the rough it tends to settle down and it’s really hard to get the club head onto the ball because you have rough that interferes with your club head and the golf ball. And so it’s unpredictable on how it flies out, but never fear, I’m going to teach you how to hit out of the rough in one of our instructional series, so keep on watching for that later on.
“After you have the rough, you have the putting green, which is the shortest grass out there on the golf course. And they have it that short because you’re supposed to roll the golf ball and if the grass is too long the ball will hop around and they’ll have inconsistencies and it’ll be really hard for you to make the golf ball go into the hole.
“So when you’re on a par three, you are on a tee box, that’s where you tee off. You put your tee into the ground and you’re on a fairway cut, hitting onto the green. So you have bunkers which are essentially holes filled with sand. Yes. They’re hazards and so it’s supposed to make the golf course more difficult. ”
“So you have bunkers, which again are those sand filled holes,” Paige Spiranac continued. “You have water, which we call a water hazard. Then you have O.B. which is usually houses or places that they just don’t want you to hit into and your ball is gone. If it goes there, it’s gone. Another hazard. So there’s all these things that make up a golf course.”
O.B., by the way, stands for “out of bounds,” which she really should have also shared for the golf newbies, but didn’t.
As for the rest of you more experienced golfers who already know these basics of golf, just enjoy the wonderful camera work in the video.
