The singer uploaded a video, mockingly reciting the lines that Sweeney says in the ad that has garnered a wave of backlash.
Sydney Sweeney’s most recent ad campaign for American Eagle has not been going over well with the general public, and the more it gets viewed, the stronger the backlash becomes. One of those detractors is the rapper Doja Cat, who, in a recent video uploaded to TikTok, was seen reciting what the actress said in the ad with an exaggerated Southern accent.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,” the “Juicy” rapper mimics in the video. “My jeans are blue.”
Sweeney’s latest American Eagle campaign has spurred a wave of criticism, with some people saying that it has an undercurrent of racist ideologies, promotes eugenics, and could be construed as fascist propaganda. This is because the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” is a play on words (jeans vs. genes), and given Sweeney’s blonde hair and blue eyes, some are seeing the ad as a “Nazi dog whistle.”

After the ad went live, it was almost immediately met with allegations of being tone deaf. In a second video, Sweeney can be seen talking about her jeans in a sultry tone as the camera pans down to her chest, and she says, “Hey! Eyes up here!”
Neither Sweeney nor American Eagle has responded publicly to the backlash, but the ad has been doing wonders for the company. “American Eagle’s stock jumped 10%, adding more than $200 million to the group’s value—a godsend for a brand that had had a disastrous year on the stock market,” Vanity Fair reports.
The ad, too, is raising money for a charitable cause. The “Sydney Jean” features a butterfly on the back pocket, which the company’s website says is to represent “domestic violence awareness,” and all the proceeds from the jeans will be donated to the Crisis Text Line, “a nonprofit offering free, 24/7, confidential mental health support to anyone in need.”
