Diddy’s Kids Sing Happy Birthday ‘Plot to Win Over Jury’
Prosecutors claim the video of Diddy’s kids celebrating their dad’s birthday in prison was a ploy to win over the jury.
In the video, posted to the Instagram accounts of all seven of his children on the evening of November 4, the children gather around a cake, singing Happy Birthday to Diddy, who turns 55. The youngest daughter, Love Combs, two, sings Happy Birthday, while her siblings join in.
According to court documents, the disgraced music mogul was charged with obstruction of justice for ordering his children to launch a social media campaign on his 55th birthday, hoping to persuade the jury to rule in his favor.
“In an effort to avoid scrutiny from law enforcement, the defendant engaged in a variety of actions, including orchestrating social media campaigns, attempting to publicize material he believed would be useful to his case, and contacting witnesses through third parties,” prosecutors said in a Manhattan federal court filing opposing Combs’ bail.
Prosecutors allege Diddy monitored every social media interaction from jail and even discussed with his family how to ensure the videos would resonate with viewers and jurors. The rapper’s plan appears to have worked, to some extent. His children’s posts were flooded with supportive comments, some of which expressed sadness at what his children were going through.
The new charges were first reported by TMZ. The documents were filed by prosecutors to deny Combs’ latest attempt to post bail while he awaits trial on charges of conspiracy to commit extortion, sex trafficking and transporting people for prostitution.
Prosecutors argue that the singer is a flight risk because he has unlimited resources, poses a danger to the public because of his alleged history of violence and attempts to contact witnesses and victims who could provide crucial testimony against him. Combs, who has pleaded not guilty, is seeking bail despite having been denied twice since his September arrest.
