Amy Winehouse opened up about her battle with depression prior to her death.

In a preview clip for the new documentary film Amy, the late singer candidly speaks about how she managed her mental health.

In particular the songstress, who died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011, reveals that music offered her a way of fighting the condition.

She said: “I don’t think I knew what depression was. I know I felt funny sometimes and I was different.

“It’s a musician thing, that’s why I write music.

“I’m not like some messed up person, you know? There’s a lot of people that suffer depression that don’t have an outlet, you know what I mean?”

The two-hour documentary film will hit theatres on Friday, July 3.

It has already been screened at Cannes Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival.
