Marvel adds fourth movie that could be released in 2028

Disney announced Wednesday that Marvel Studios is set to release an untitled film on December 15, 2028. It will be the studio’s fourth feature film of that calendar year, with previously announced films slated for February, May, and November 2028.
If all four films keep those release dates — which is still uncertain — it would be a surprising move for the studio, given that Disney CEO Bob Iger recently publicly admitted that Marvel “lost focus a little bit by doing too many things.”
“We all know that in our desire to fill our streaming platform with more content, we’ve taken all of our creative tools, including Marvel, and let them produce more,” Iger said on an investor call in May. “Over time, we’ve also learned that quantity doesn’t necessarily equal quality. And frankly, we all admit that we’ve gotten a little distracted by doing too much. By consolidating a little bit and having Marvel focus more on their movies, we believe that will result in better quality.”
It’s unclear, however, whether Marvel will actually release four movies in 2028. Disney has a history of holding release dates for feature projects past when they could realistically debut to ensure they remain available for the company’s other films: Marvel’s “Blade” was removed from its November 2025 release date only after Disney was ready to put 20th Century Studios’ “Predator: Badlands” in its place.
In 2026 and 2027, Marvel has significantly scaled back its feature-length slate. After “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” opens in July, the studio will produce two films in 2026 — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (a co-production with Sony Pictures) in July and “Avengers: Doomsday” in December; and two films in 2027 — an untitled project in July and “Avengers: Secret Wars” in December.
“Secret Wars” is expected to be the conclusion of the Multiverse, after which Marvel is expected to pivot to a story centered on the characters Disney inherited from its 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox: the X-Men. “Thunderbolts” director Jake Schreier has been tapped to direct the MCU’s first mutant movie (though several actors from Fox’s 2000s “X-Men” movies, including Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, will appear in “Doomsday”). Other Marvel projects in development that could debut in 2028 include the aforementioned “Blade,” “Black Panther 3” and a “Fantastic Four” sequel.
