American singer Elle King recently got candid about her “toxic” relationship with her actor father Rob Schneider.
In an edited teaser of the Dumb Blonde podcast posted on TikTok on Saturday, August 10, the I Told You I Was Mean artist talked about her upbringing with Schneider. She told the podcast host Bunnie Xo about being heavy as a child and that her father’s solution to that was shipping her off to a “fat camp.” She said:
“I was like, a really, really heavy child. My dad sent me to a fat camp. And then I got in trouble one year because I sprained my ankle and I didn’t lose any weight. Very toxic and very silly.”
Another one of the reasons why they don’t get along, she said, is Schneider’s opinions on social issues. The Ex’s & Oh’s singer said that they have opposing opinions, adding:
“He’s just talking out of his a** and I want to use this opportunity to say that I disagree. I do not agree with what he says.”
Elle King opens up about her father Rob Schneider’s presence in her childhood
Elsewhere in the podcast teaser, Elle King recalled her life growing up and mentioned that her father wasn’t a huge part of her childhood.
They weren’t close and only started to connect when she was “much, much older.”
“If I would ever spend a simmer with my dad, it would be on a movie set,” she added.
“If I ever messed up a short, if I was talking, I would get in f**king trouble.”
Another thing that strained the father-daughter relationship is Elle King’s tattoos. She said that she had to wear sweaters when she started getting tattoos even if it was 108 degrees outside, because her dad was “very anti-tattoos or any form of self-expression.”
Also in the podcast teaser, Elle King detailed how Rob Schneider has forgotten every singer of her birthday celebration, including her 18th birthday.
She recalled spending the day in a summer school and people brought her cupcakes to celebrate the occasion, but when she returned home, her dad had forgotten about it.
During her 2018 interview with People, King mentioned that she’d grown closer to her father after she left a “destructive” marriage, but their relationship isn’t as great as one would hope.
Elsewhere in the podcast teaser, she noted that her father doesn’t have a stellar reputation and that she doesn’t want to be associated with him.
