Mariska Hargitay Supports New Initiative to Help Abuse Victims and Their Pets
Mariska Hargitay is once again making headlines for her impactful work both on and off the screen. Known for her iconic role as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, Hargitay’s influence extends far beyond television. Recently, she has garnered attention for her role in unveiling “Courageous Together,” a striking new statue by Kristen Visbal, the artist behind New York’s renowned “Fearless Girl.”
The statue, commissioned as part of the Purple Leash Project, depicts a domestic violence survivor and her dog, connected by a purple leash, taking a courageous step forward. This initiative, led by Purina and the nonprofit RedRover, aims to make more domestic violence shelters pet-friendly. This allows survivors to escape abuse while keeping their beloved pets, eliminating the painful choice between their safety and their animal’s well-being.
Hargitay, a longtime advocate for survivors of abuse through her Joyful Heart Foundation, was visibly moved by the statue. “It took my breath away,” she told Parade. “The statue is powerful yet tender, with a grace and determination in the survivor’s eyes and the protective gaze of her dog. It’s elegant and regal, compelling us to confront the harsh realities survivors face while also engaging with the subject matter in a compassionate way.”
The actress discussed the significance of this initiative and her role in it, emphasizing her commitment to raising awareness about domestic and sexual violence. “These issues are epidemics that demand our attention,” Hargitay said. “Speaking out and uniting our voices is crucial for healing and change. It wasn’t really a choice for me; it’s a responsibility.”
Hargitay’s Joyful Heart Foundation aligns closely with the Purple Leash Project’s mission. “Our goal is to change how society responds to victims of abuse,” she explained. “Purina’s initiative addresses a critical need, as nearly 50% of survivors delay leaving their abuser because they can’t choose between their safety and their pets. Making shelters pet-friendly is a significant step toward healing.”
On a lighter note, fans of Law & Order: SVU are eagerly awaiting some respite for Olivia Benson, a character known for her relentless pursuit of justice. When asked about potential vacation plans for Benson, Hargitay joked, “Can Olivia go to Italy for a month? I’ve asked for a Paris episode, but we’ll find some healing in Season 26. I promise Olivia Benson will get a vacation.”
Mariska Hargitay continues to be a powerful force for change, using her platform to support survivors and advocate for systemic improvements. Her dedication to these causes remains as strong as ever, resonating deeply with both her fans and the broader community.
