Popular golf influencer Paige Spiranac had something to say after Nelly Korda had a shocking start at the US Women’s Open. She said golf was tough after the world No. 1 made a septuple bogey in the first round.
Korda entered the US Women’s Open with six wins in the past seven starts. However, the start wasn’t encouraging, as she carded 10-over 80 in the opening round. Her round included a ten on the par 3, 12th hole, where she found the water three times before making a septuple bogey.
On par-3 hole 12, Nelly Korda’s tee shot found the back bunker, and then her approach shot landed in the stream near the green. After dropping on the right fairway, her chip landed in the penalty area. She dropped another shot, and this time she crossed the stream, but the slope on the green forced the ball to roll backward into the hazard. Eventually, she reached near the pin on her eighth shot and made it in two putts.
Besides the septuple bogey, Nelly Korda also made six bogeys and just three birdies in her first round. During the post-round interview, she said that she didn’t want to shoot 80 but struggled hard to stop the bogeys. This was her second straight 80 at the US Women’s Open. Last year, she shot 81 in the final round at Oak Hill.
Korda is currently twelve strokes behind the leader, Yuka Saso, who carded a 2-under 68.
