Eminem’s heartfelt lullaby “Mockingbird” reveals a deeply personal side of the rapper, offering a raw and emotional glimpse into his struggles as a father.

When Marshall Mathers introduced the world to Slim Shady, he uttered three memorable words: My name is.

The rapper known as Eminem became famous with his alter ego, displaying many sides that were beloved and equally controversial. Yet, within the complexity of one of the world’s greatest rappers is also someone capable of crafting a tender serenade for his daughters.

“Mockingbird” appears on his 2004 album Encore. It’s a musical detour from what fans might expect from the artist behind “Stan,” “The Real Slim Shady,” or “Without Me.”

Papa’s Gonna Buy You a Diamond Ring

“Mockingbird” is Eminem’s real-life lullaby. The rapper writes about struggling to support a family with his wife, Kim Scott, whom he met in high school. He details the tumult of their marriage and the financial struggles in an episode where Scott wraps and signs Christmas gifts in Eminem’s name because he couldn’t afford to buy his children presents.

I remember back one year when Daddy had no money
Mommy wrapped the Christmas presents up and stuck ’em up under the tree
And said some of ’em were from me ’cause Daddy couldn’t buy ’em
I’ll never forget that Christmas, I sat up the whole night crying
’Cause Daddy felt like a bum—see, Daddy had a job
But his job was to keep the food on the table for you and Mom

He uses “Hush, Little Baby” to draft his hook, mixing the sweetness of the old lullaby with the harsh reality of his family’s life—poverty, addiction, home invasions, and custody battles.

Now hush, little baby, don’t you cry
Everything’s gonna be all right
Stiffen that upper lip up, little lady, I told ya
Daddy’s here to hold ya through the night

Dr. Dre and Success

Once Dr. Dre had received Eminem’s music, his family’s life changed. But the money and fame added a new dimension to the turmoil. As Eminem quickly rose to become one of the best-selling artists of the decade, the media turned its attention toward his family.

Still, Eminem uses a gentle rap to explain the circumstances to his young daughters Hailie Jade and Alaina Marie. Eminem’s fifth studio album Encore arrived 20 years ago and “Mockingbird” offers a time stamp to his children who are now young women.

Eminem co-wrote “Mockingbird” with longtime collaborator Luis Resto, who also co-wrote and co-produced Eminem’s Oscar-winning hit “Lose Yourself.”

“Mockingbird” reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Encore topped the album charts. The tender track might be a departure for Eminem, but it ends with his familiar, biting wit.

And if you ask me to, Daddy’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
I’ma give you the world
I’ma buy a diamond ring for you, I’ma sing for you

I’ll do anything for you to see you smile
And if that mockingbird don’t sing and that ring don’t shine
I’ma break that birdie’s neck
I’ll go back to the jeweler who sold it to ya
And make him eat every carat, don’t f–k with Dad

What’s My Name

In the music video for “Mockingbird,” Eminem uses home video clips showing his young family. The footage then cuts to the rapper in the studio with Dr. Dre, followed by his rise to stardom and awards shows. But watching clips of the little girls dressed up for Halloween, swinging in the yard, or celebrating birthdays, shows they don’t see Eminem or Slim Shady or the world’s biggest rapper. They only see dad.
