It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez has a reputation for being shady but what a lot of people don’t know is that she actively worked to sabotage the careers of multiple women…allegedly, of course.
Mariah Carey’s long-standing feud with Jennifer Lopez (JLo) has resurfaced after new evidence suggested Mariah was right all along, accusing JLo of undermining other artists, particularly black female artists. This revelation has reignited discussions around Mariah’s infamous “I don’t know her” comment about JLo.
The feud dates back to the late 1990s, linked to Mariah’s ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, the former head of Sony Music. Mariah alleged in her 2020 memoir that Tommy tried to sabotage her career using JLo. One notable incident involved a sample from the song “Firecracker” by Yellow Magic Orchestra. Mariah intended to use it for her “Glitter” soundtrack, but Tommy reportedly gave it to JLo for her song “I’m Real,” also involving Ja Rule, who had initially collaborated with Mariah.
Additionally, Ashanti, who recorded the demo for “I’m Real,” claimed some of her vocals remained on the final track. Similarly, Shante Moore’s song “If I Gave Love” was allegedly taken by Diddy for JLo, transforming into her hit “If You Had My Love.”
JLo has been accused of using other artists’ vocals and songs without proper credit. For instance, Natasha Ramos’s vocals were prominent in “Jenny from the Block,” and Christina Milian sang the chorus for “Play.” Brandy’s song “Ride or Die” also ended up with JLo, with Brandy’s vocals still intact in parts.
These controversies have not only fueled Mariah’s criticism but also drawn in other artists like Brandy, who has publicly sided with Mariah. Moreover, JLo’s recent actions, such as allegedly shading Beyoncé, have further tarnished her reputation.
Fans generally support Mariah, believing JLo’s success came at the expense of other artists’ work. One fan commented, “JLo was allowed to outright steal vocals and full songs from black women, with black men paving the way for her to do it.”
